Road Trip Gas Cost Calculator
Estimate what gas will cost for any drive, using the current average price of gasoline from official EIA data. Enter your total miles (or an origin and destination), your vehicle’s MPG, and a fuel grade.
For example, a 500-mile trip at 30 MPG, using the U.S. average regular price of $4.05/gal (as of June 15, 2026), needs about 16.7 gallons — roughly $67.53.
Driving an EV? This tool estimates gasoline cost; electricity is priced differently (per kWh), so MPG doesn’t apply.
Price: Regular gasoline, U.S. average, as of June 15, 2026.
Gallons needed = trip miles ÷ your MPG; estimated cost = gallons × the price per gallon. Prices are the current average retail price of regular gasoline from the U.S. Energy Information Administration — live weekly values for the nine states EIA reports weekly, and a regional estimate elsewhere — held in our own database. Mid-grade and premium add the national average premium over regular. Driving distances for origin → destination come from OpenStreetMap and are approximate. This is an estimate for planning, not an exact figure.
